Common Study Abroad FAQ

1. When is the best time to study abroad?

Plan to study abroad as early as possible in your college career. For example, the second semester of your sophomore year can be a good option. One advantage of studying abroad early is that you are more likely to have general education requirements available, which are often easier to complete overseas than courses within your major. Studying abroad earlier also gives you more flexibility to reschedule if your plans change.

2. What semester is best for studying abroad?
You have several options, including fall or spring semester, January term, full-year programs, one-month summer programs at Lyon study abroad sites, and two-week trips that are usually scheduled from mid- to late May.

3. How long should I study abroad?
In general, the longer you study abroad, the more opportunities you will have to improve your language proficiency, intercultural skills, and self-confidence. However, the best choice depends on your individual circumstances. Consider how long you are comfortable being away from family, whether you need to work, whether you need to be on campus for certain required courses, and how much you can afford beyond the scholarships or financial aid available to you.

4. Can I study abroad more than once?
Lyon College study abroad funding is generally available only once. However, if you are able to cover the additional expenses yourself or secure other funding, you may study abroad more than once.

5. What should I study abroad?
Courses such as history, art, language, and anthropology are often the easiest to find abroad and transfer back to Lyon. It may be more difficult to find transferable courses in technical, business, and science-related subjects. In many cases, it may make more sense to complete those courses in the U.S. Exceptions may include programs such as those at the Vesuvian Institute in Italy, where Lyon faculty teach courses overseas.

6. How much does Lyon College provide in scholarships for study abroad?
The Nichols Program provides qualified students with $1,800 for two-week Nichols trips, $2,000 for one-month programs, and $3,000 for programs lasting longer than one month and up to one academic year.

7. Are there other sources of financial support for study abroad?
Yes. For study abroad programs lasting one month or longer, federal and state financial aid may be available. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information. Additional scholarships, including the Gilman and Boren Scholarships, may also be available and are explained in the scholarship section of this website.

8. When should I apply for a passport?
You should apply for a passport as early as possible. Because you cannot travel internationally without one and processing times can vary, applying early helps prevent delays from affecting your travel plans.

9. Do I need a visa to travel abroad?
Visa requirements depend on your destination, nationality, and length of stay. Short-term travelers may not need a visa for some countries, while semester- and year-long programs often require a student visa. Be sure to check the current entry requirements for your destination well in advance of your trip.

10. What are the first steps I should take to study or travel abroad?
Start by reviewing the information on this site about choosing a study abroad program. Then, talk with your family and academic advisor, and visit the Office of International Education to discuss your options and next steps.
